I am a PhD student at the School of Information, University of Michigan. I’m advised by Nicole Ellison. My dissertation work, situated at the intersection of Communication, HCI, and Social Psychology scholarship, documents and theorizes the psychological and communicative mechanisms through which users cultivate quasi-interpersonal relationships with surprisingly human-like AI chatbots whose nature remains ambiguous for them. I mainly use qualitative research methods including interviews and participant observation. In previous years, I studied sociocultural factors in digital skills learning with a focus on bonding relationships and social support in an underresourced community using a community-based participatory research method. Prior to coming back to graduate school, I worked as a product manager and communication specialist in the industry.
